The DC football team name.
Confederate flags/statue removal.
Black Lives Matter.
Gay marriage.
It is really dramatic to have lived to see how drastically and quickly public support changed on these topics. I’m sure other topics would fit here too but these come to my mind first. Not long ago people wrote & protested on these subjects and were shouted down. Now, gay marriage is the law, upheld by the Supreme Court. Dan Snyder has officially announced a name change for the football team (after having previously said it will never happen “Never. You can use caps.”). Even NASCAR and Mississippi have removed Confederate flags. And there are protests throughout the world advocating for racial equality and legislation has already been passed in some cities aimed at addressing some of the problems brought up by BLM. Businesses having previously distanced themselves from Colin Kaepernick are now being pressured to support his causes and admit they were wrong.
I find myself often reminded of people talking about how we should take care to make sure we wind up the right side of history. Make no mistake, we are living in it.
Some people see these changes and lament the changing culture. Others think of the MLK Jr. quote “the arc of the moral universe is long and it bends towards justice.”
